JA Garfield Local School District

The Mission of the James A. Garfield School District is to serve our district by providing educational opportunities for all
to become lifelong learners and productive members of society.

The entire James A. Garfield School family was elated the district received an EXCELLENT state rating for the 2008/09 year; our second consecutive year.  This is the first time the district has earned an Excellentstate rating back to back.  The high school achieved an Excellent for the 6th consecutive year while achieving the highest ever Performance Index of 106.  Our seniors achieved the highest ever on National Advanced Placement Tests in calculus, chemistry, English and government this past year with four students scoring a 5, the highest and Nathan Hadzinsky and Kaitlyn Radwanski scored a 3 or higher in three areas.  Mrs. Scanlon and Mr. Engelhart are quite proud of them.  It was the 3rd year for the elementary school to also earn the distinction of an Excellent building.  This is so meaningful for the students and teachers who work hard daily to achieve this success.  Our school family is appreciative of the parents, Board, administration and the communities support.  The district earned 27 of a possible 30 indicators, achieved Average Yearly Progress and the Value Added rating.  Our goal for 2009/10 is to maintain all of these ratings and to exceed 100 as a district to also earn the Performance Index rating.

We were able to earn an Excellent state rating spending $7,437 per child, the lowest in Portage County.  Our staff works very hard to provide a quality education for our students while managing the financial resources the community is able to provide.  When this is the situation, it is win-win for everyone!

The Board and administration have walked a financial tightrope continuing to balance the budget while offering quality educational programs and co-curricular opportunities for our students.  School should be a wonderful experience for kids of today and the future.  Every member of the James A. Garfield School family works at making school a warm and inviting place for students of all ages.

Please continue to view our website frequently and provide feedback or contact me with a suggestion or concern.  We are always interested in improving our schools and appreciate hearing from you.  The James A. Garfield School personnel are here to serve students, parents and the members of the community.  It is this partnership of respect that makes our district one in which everyone wants to be involved.  Call me at 330-527-4336, mailbox 601 or email me at cklamer@mail.garfield.sparcc.org
