Third Grade Expectations

Students are expected to use manners and polite behavior in the classroom and other school settings.  The qualities of responsibilities, respect, honesty, and citizenship will be emphasized.  I believe in building a classroom community that both supports individuals and fosters teamwork.

Classroom Curriculum

MATH – Students are expected to have mastered the addition and subtraction facts.  Multiplication and division, fraction, and decimals are learned in third grade.  Problem solving skills and written responses are emphasized throughout the year.

LANGUAGE ARTS – Third graders are expected to write in complete sentences and use proper paragraph structure.  Fluency and comprehension are emphasized in reading.  My goal is to strengthen and challenge reading and writing skills, so the student becomes an independent reader and writer.  Students will participate in a reading incentive program, Reading Counts.  This program encourages reading and comprehension in hopes that reading will become a life long habit.

SOCIAL STUDIES – The concept of local community, past and present, and how it is governed is developed.  Skills of reading maps, globes and charts may be assigned.

SCIENCE – Units related to rocks and minerals, forces and motion,  and animal life cycles and habits are studied.  Special projects related to these topics may be assigned.

HANDWRITING – Cursive writing is introduced and practiced during the first half of the year.  Cursive writing is reinforced and will be expected on all assignments by the end of the year.

HOMEWORK – YES!  Homework assignments will come home with a homework sheet in the Communicator folder.  Late or missing assignments will affect overall  report card grades.
