- Click Start > Programs > Computer Lab programs
- PowerPoint should open with a blank slide on the screen that is in the
Title-Slide layout.
4
- Click in the box that says “Click to add title” and type the title of
your presentation.
- Click in the box that says “Click to add subtitle” and type your name
and period number.
- Click the New Slide button on the formatting toolbar. Choose Title and 2-column Text from
the slide layout task pane.
5
- The content for the summary slide should contain a list of all the
titles (topics) of your presentation.
- Use this slide to briefly introduce the topics you will be discussing in
your presentation.
- Think of this as a table of contents slide.
- Some people prefer to complete the other slides and come back to this
one when they are finished.
- Add a new slide to the presentation and choose an appropriate layout.
6
7
- Slide layouts include: Text
layouts, content layouts, text and content layouts, and other layouts.
- You may choose one that meets your needs or you can choose a blank slide
and draw textboxes on the slide to hold text using the Text Box tool
from the Drawing toolbar.
- See the Next slide for a sample of a Title, Text, and Content Slide
which I have added a text box below the picture.
8
9
- Continue to add slides and complete the text content according to your
outline.
- To apply a Slide Design, click the Design button on the formatting
toolbar.
- Scroll through the designs in the slide design task pane until you find
one you like.
- Click the design, and your presentation will apply this design to all
slides.
10
- Choose File > Save from the standard menu.
- Save the file to your student z: drive on the Garfield network.
- Name the file the last name of your inventor!
11
12
- Now that you have entered all your text in your slides, it is time to
add clip art and photos to illustrate your topic.
- The following slides will show you how to insert clip art and pictures.
- Once all the slides have been illustrated, you will learn to add
animation to your slide show.
13
- Choose Insert > Pictures > Clip Art to get the clip art task pane
to show. Type in a search keyword
then click Search.
- Animated ClipArt is marked with a star in the bottom right corner!
14

15
- Choose Insert > Pictures > From File then browse to the folder
where you have the pictures saved.
- Hint: Find a picture on the
Internet you want to use.

that you will remember what it is!
16
17
- The slide transition tool applies a special effect for the slides when
they switch from one side to the next.
- Choose Slide Show from the menu bar, then choose Slide Transition. The Slide transition task pane will
appear on the right.
- Choose a transition and click the apply to all slides button. Use transition with caution! Some can be distracting!
18
19
- Choose Slide Show > Animation Schemes to apply an animation theme
- There are pre-designed animation schemes which are easier to use as it
makes all the animation the same on every slide.
- You may also apply separate animation to each object by choosing Slide
Show > Custom animation but this can be rather time consuming.
- Avoid Over-Use of animation. Just
enough to get your point across!
20
21
- Typically you will want one line to come in at a time so you can
elaborate on the topic.
- You will want to make sure the animation is set to advance on “click”
rather than “timed” at this point.
- Try to add custom animation to graphics and pictures so that they enter
with the sentence they are illustrating.
See next slide for an example!

- Now that you have all the content, illustrations, and animations
finished, it is time to practice speaking with your presentation!
- Go to view > Notes Page to add speaker notes to your slides. Here you can write out your speech for
each slide of your presentation!
24

- Your presentation should be an informative speech that tells us about a
famous inventor in the area of computers.
- Slides should be illustrated to help keep the listeners engaged in your
speech.
- Don’t forget to include a reference slide that lists all websites and
sources used in your presentation (including images).
- Practice your speech with the person sitting next to you. Critique each other’s presentations!
