Course Outline and Requirements
Academic Standards: Vocabulary, Reading Applications, Reading Process, Writing Processes, Writing Applications, Writing Conventions, Communication: Oral and Visual, Research. The Standards are covered in the following themes:

Objectives: Reading Students will continue to increase their reading comprehension and critical
thinking skills by reading many forms of written text including fiction, poetry,
drama,informational, technical, magazines, essays, and maps.
Writing Students will improve writing skills by using the writing processes of
prewriting, drafting, revising and editing to publish different types of writing. In writing
applications they will write stories, responses, letters, and persuasive essays. In writing
conventions they will apply punctuations, grammar, and spelling rules.
Communication: Oral and Visual Students will deliver information on various topics
in group and individual presentations. Every student will present a persuasive
speech following the standards.
Research Students will be able to gather information using books, computers,
magazines, newspapers, interviews. A research project will be presented using oral,
visual, and written forms of communication.
Textbooks: We use our Reading textbook and the soft cover Practice Book. We will also use
classroom collections of paperback novels.
Independent Reading through Reading Counts: Worth 25% of Language Arts grade
Students are responsible for having a Reading Counts book of their choice in class every
day. Books are available in the school library and the classroom library. Students are
required to earn 50 Reading Counts points per grading period with a goal of 200 points
this year. They will read every day for 10-15 minutes during class and will also be expected
to read at home. Reading Counts points are earned by taking comprehension quizzes on
the computer during Language Arts class and during library time.
Journals: Every student has a journal that stays in class. We journal at least once a week.
Journal entries are used to learn the journaling process, respond to selections,
and generate writing ideas.
Homework: Assignments are to be turned in on time. Late homework will not be accepted.
Use your daily agenda! Homework assignments are posted on the board in
every teacher's classroom. Homework Hotline # is 330-527-0027, extension 1131.
Absent Policy: Students are responsible for completing any assignments missed due to
an absence.
