Welcome to the James A. Garfield School District through technology. It is a wonderful way to know what is happening, whether you are a parent, student or an interested community member. We strive to provide information about our school for the students and the numerous ways teachers and staff guide learning for them. As you peruse our website and have an opportunity to visit our schools you will experience the inviting climate for the students to learn. Although we must keep our students safe at all times, please feel free to call ahead to schedule a time to visit our schools. When there are special student programs, our students would love to have you attend.
Academically, the students earned the district another Effective state rating with 26 of 30 indicators on the state report card; while the high school and elementary are rated Excellent schools with perfect scores.
Athletically, our players had successful seasons with league championships in girl's soccer and softball; the football team won their third consecutive P.T.C. championship and the girl's bowling team finished 8th in the state. Our quiz bowl team, band and drama group also had an outstanding year. Please support our students by attending middle and high school events.
If you are a Garfield senior citizen be sure you have your gold G-Man card for free admission to all home activities; call 527-4336 or stop for your free lifetime pass at the Orson E. Ott Administrative Offices between 8am-4pm.
Senior citizens: October 1, 2007 is the deadline to apply for your $25,000 credit on your appraised home value to lower your real estate taxes. There is no income limit. Call the Portage County Auditor at 297-3569 or 297-3570 for information.

The Board of Education and superintendent have set two major goals for the year. Improve students' state test scores to achieve an Excellent rating, although the H.S. and E.S. achieved this in 2006/07 while the other two buildings and the district received an Effective rating. Everyone will be working toward this goal. The second major goal is to improve communications with the community and staff. We welcome your suggestions to improve communications.
As you have heard recently, the State is offering the James A. Garfield School District "matching" monies to completely renovate or construct new buildings as per the State's requirements. The State will be providing us with an assessment of our buildings and their recommendations as to what to build and the cost. It now appears the State would fund approximately 55% and the local share would be about 45%. The Board will study the information and present it to you at special public meetings over the next nine months. With your help, the Board would like to make a decision within the next year. The community will have many opportunities to study the information and share your ideas with the Board.
Please continue to view our website frequently. Feel free to provide feedback or contact us with a concern. The Garfield School personnel desire to serve students, parents and community members. Call me at 330-527-4336 (mailbox 601) or email me at cklamer@mail.garfield.sparcc.org with any questions or comments.
The James A. Garfield Schools are tobacco-free. We appreciate you not using tobacco on school property!
Educationally,
